Miami Friends Announcements
Another Meaning for Mothers Day
This First Day is also Mothers Day, and Peace & Social Concerns will be holding an open meeting in the 9:30 hour on "Mothers Day's Other Meaning." Curious about what that might be, and why P&SC would bring it up? Come and see.
Universal Quakerism
A new Meeting for Learning has been scheduled for this coming First Day on the subject of Universal Quakerism. John Stevens will lead us in a session exploring how Quakerism has been -- and still is -- evolving. The discussion should be of interest to both friends and attenders and will likely be a wide-ranging one.
But first, on Friday the 4th at 4:30, Laura's young violinists will be in recital at the meeting house, followed by a picnic potluck dinner in the garden at Bartram house.
About Membership
We have another big weekend coming up. First on Friday comes Peace & Popcorn with a screening of Buck -- a documentary about the man who inspired The Horse Whisperer. Click the link to read more about it and see a sample. And here's a review from the NY Times.
Next on Saturday is a potluck at the Levensons' to welcome Andrea and Philip as members of the Miami meeting. Come early at 5:00 for swimming and socializing, with the potluck to start at 6:30. See this previous newsletter for details and directions.
Then, appropriately enough, on First Day in the 9:30 hour we will have a session about membership in the meeting and in the wider Quaker community. Friends will be invited to share from their experience, and to answer any questions that may be in the minds of attenders and guests. All are welcome.
In preparation for this meeting you might wish to review the section of our Faith and Practice regarding membership. It can be downloaded here from the SEYM website.
New Home for First Day School
First Day School has its own space! We have moved into two rooms called "the sunporch" of Bartram House, a century old building with historic designation which Miami Friends Meeting owns adjacent to the Meetinghouse....

This Saturday Laura's young violinists will be in concert at Epworth Village in Hialeah, 3:00 PM.
But Wait -- There's Still More
Believe it or not, there are two more events that didn't make it into this week's newsletter. Time is short, so here they are:
First, our friend Winslow is celebrating a big birthday this week, so a potluck celebration is planned after worship this First Day, 4/15. Friends are requested to bring the same sorts of food you would normally bring for a monthly "eating meeting."
Then this announcement from Kathy Hersh:
A Busy Month
Yearly Meeting may be over, but many more things are happening in the rest of Fourth Month:
Yearly Meeting
Just a quick reminder that the SEYM annual gathering is now underway. Attendence at Miami Friends will be somewhat sparse this week, but a few of us stalwarts will be present.
Warren Hoskins shared a note from Lyn Cope, SEYM Secretary, that says "... it looks like this will be our largest YBM-Gathering in years and quadrupling youth attendance. We are well on target of funding the youth meals and lodging, thanks to volunteers who knitted and crafted and others who opened their hearts and pockets." Sounds pretty successful!
There is no meeting for learning scheduled this week, but refer to the calendar and last week's newsletter for other upcoming events. Tentatively scheduled for this month's Peace & Popcorn is Buck, a documentary portrait of the man who inspired the movie The Horse Whisperer. Here's a review from the New York Times.
Not an April Fools Joke
Business Meeting: This reminder is no joke -- our next meeting for worship with a concern for business has been moved up to 4/1 so it won't conflict with the SEYM yearly gathering (4/4 through 4/8), which many friends from our meeting will be attending. Committees are reminded to prepare any reports to be submitted for discernment.
Meetings for Learning: The remaining firstdays in fourthmonth all have meetings for learning scheduled in the 9:30 hour:
Last Minute Reminders
Just a quick follow up to be sure everyone remembers:
TONIGHT - Peace & Popcorn - Icizere:Hope about the work of Friends Peace Teams in Rwanda.
See this previous newsletter for details.
TOMORROW - Saturday 8 AM - 12 PM - friends are invited to help with a work day at the meeting house.
You can arrive whenever it is best for you during these hours.
THIS FIRST DAY - Special Meeting for Learning on the subject of vocal ministry in the meeting for worship.
It's also the day for our monthly potluck, so the discussion may continue as we break bread together.
